We ask some Bostonians to envision a doctor of the future and bring their questions about medical training to Thomas Michel, dean for Education at Harvard Medical School. Dean Michel is also a senior physician in the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where his laboratory studies signaling pathways in the cardiovascular system. In addition, he sees patients as a practicing cardiologist and clinician-teacher.

Medical students have a lot to learn. One of the lessons is that research isn’t easy.
About half of all Harvard medical students spend the summer between their first and second years doing research in the lab or in the clinic. One-quarter of the students take a full year or more doing extra research before they graduate. Some Harvard professors consider research a crucial part of a medical education.
Each year, Harvard Medical School sets aside a day to celebrate student research. Carol Cruzan Morton reports on this special event.
